NI tech partners create new safety and security system for Construction Industry

Two Northern Ireland tech companies have joined forces to create a new turnstile with an in-built software system to improve safety and security on construction sites across the UK and Ireland.

Craigavon-based security technology company Envision Intelligent Solutions, which also has offices in England and the USA, teamed up with Lisburn software development firm NTD (North Time and Data) to launch the latest development of their bespoke security turnstile that uses facial recognition technology and records temperatures to help ensure a Covid-free workspace.

The Gateway Turnstile, which is manufactured by Envision in Craigavon, incorporates a new cloud-based software system that links directly to the company’s payroll and HR systems. The first turnstile with the new cloud-based software has rolled off the production line and has been shipped to a large building site in Chepstow in Wales for construction fit-out company Beacons Business Interiors (Bbi Group).

Philip Murdock, Envision IS Managing Director said: “Our clients in the construction industry asked for a bespoke security system that incorporated facial and thermal access readers with a time and attendance system, which is completely cloud networked. During the pandemic, they needed a contactless product that could link back to their head office and provide the data in real time.”

Amanda Campbell Envision IS Commercial Director added: “Envision moved quickly to get contactless turnstiles to the marketplace to support construction companies to keep sites open and personnel safe.”

Envision partnered with NTD to create the cloud software for the new turnstiles that gave construction companies improved security and communications between the sites and their head offices. NTD adapted its successful NT Pro Workforce Management System to the requirements of the construction industry.

NTD Managing Director Stephen Brown explained: “The Biometric Facial Recognition Terminals and NT Pro Software not only record the time and date of an employee coming onto a construction site, but it also takes their temperature and alerts management if an employee has a high temperature. We believe that with this partnership, there will be a well-structured and user-friendly system that makes it easy for smooth operations and overall profit maximization.”

The software comes with modules that are particularly useful to construction site security. For example, it allows companies to upload CSR/CSCS qualifications and gives access to personnel training files that can all be viewed from the live dashboard ensuring health and safety qualifications are up to date. Additionally, the software provides full job costing, financial reporting and statistics.

The first turnstile was shipped to commercial fit-out specialists Bbi Group, which design, fit-out and refurbish commercial premises across the UK. The company has secured a contract to completely refurbish a 20,000m2 storage warehouse in Chepstow and will have approximately 100 people working on site over the 13-month period.

Dave Bastier from Bbi said the company chose the Envision Gateway turnstile as it needed an efficient means to control access to and from site that would not cause an issue with social distancing and contamination of touch surfaces.

He said: “The Envision Gateway has been positioned between the car park and the principal entrance to site and provided the perfect solution to that need. Training and backup for our site administrator has also been excellent.”

Service Continuity Update

As the situation around the country rapidly changes and businesses and organisation are massively impacted, Envision want to provide additional reassurance to our customers as to continuation of full service delivery.

What Envision Are Working On

Over the past few months Envision have been investing in new advanced video analytical software called “Calipsa”, which reduces false video alarms to the Envision ARC (Alarm Receiving Centre).  Due to how successful this measure has been, Envision has launched a major increase in its deployment, rolling out across thousands of cameras. This is an unprecedented measure by the Company with a large investment in a short period of time. Ultimately, it ensures that we reduce false alarms and allows our staff to deal with mostly meaningful alarms (we have reduced false alarms in the magnitude of 65%). This in turn allows our monitoring teams to manage more sites with increased monitoring hours for clients who now require 24hr monitoring as sites enter lock down.

Envision have also been working on a surge work team program. We are aware that we will also suffer from expected staff shortages on a rolling pattern and to account for this we have trained extra staff to manage monitoring.  These are staff members who are currently engineers, managers and service desk staff to which all Envision staff are fully BS7858 vetted and compliant with the necessary standards.

Additionally we have also recruited new, highly experienced, ARC staff over the past weeks. This provides Envision with excellent flexibility to be fluid with shift patterns and the back fill of positions.

Under BS EN 50518 standard for the certification of ARC (design, build and operations) we have measures adopted to roll out in exceptional circumstances, to ensure uninterrupted service delivery. We have established and developed a number of remote locations to provide monitoring to allow us to continue operations. This is strictly managed and overseen by Envision senior managers.

 

Our other activities are functioning normally, with staff working under very strict hygiene procedures, with social distancing to ensure that systems on customer sites remain operational. The Engineering service teams will continue to work, unless government measures decree otherwise.  They will continue to conduct “Pre Planned Maintenance” (PPM) and reactive service calls to keep vital security and fire systems operational throughout this pandemic. 

 

We fully understand the extent of awful strain and pressure on all our customers. We also appreciate the worry and uncertainty for staff, family and friends welfare. This is a situation that none of us have experienced before and we want to ensure each of our customers that at this time, Envision is deploying every measure it can,  regardless of financial impact to keep services operational and our customers protected.

Fresh Growth with New US Export Push.

ABC Council trade mission acts as catalyst for renewed export sales for Envision as it seeks to secure major government contracts in North America.

Craigavon-based security tech firm Envision Intelligent Solutions has embarked on a major export offensive following a recent trade mission to the US organised by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.

Set-up in 2010 by local entrepreneur Philip Murdock, the company provides bespoke technology-led security solutions including remote monitoring services to an ever growing client base across the UK and Ireland, with established offices in London and Newcastle, England.

More recently, in 2020, it created a presence in the US market when it established an operational base in Boston to explore new export opportunities and service a small but significant private-sector client base.

However, the company had not previously tendered for government contracts until the trade mission when it was given access to security specialists and senior personnel within various departments of the State of Pennsylvania and the United Nations at its headquarters in New York.

Showcasing its work on the landmark High Speed 2 (HS2) rail project supplying innovative drone technology and aerial assets to support the construction progress sparked significant interest in its innovative security solutions.

The company, which has grown its staff from 5 to 60 in less than a decade, said its renewed focus on the US market had given it fresh ground for optimism as discussions advance with export potential for a new swathe of high-profile clients.

With a high-tech specialism in drones, wireless border camera systems, security vehicles and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance) aircraft, the globally-ambitious company said it is poised to secure significant US business and is now more confident in its success.

From just a handful of clients, our investment in and focus on successfully rolling out security solutions across the construction, automotive retail, manufacturing, government and professional services arena has secured us a competitive position on a world scale and we now have the ability and belief to go global with the US market firmly in sight.

Since our return, we’re now actively engaged in the purchasing process for a number of significant US orders which would represent a significant export boost for us and a major market breakthrough.

We are indebted to the Council for helping us identify untapped export opportunities in the US.

“This year, as it’s my first year at Envision, I will be raising money for our friends at Skywatch : Northern Ireland Search and rescue.” – Philip, Envision Team member

Skywatch are an airbourne observation charity operating UK wide for over 10 years.

Skywatch also assist the Northern Ireland fire and rescue service by attending fires where they are in need of extra protection, to observe and report.

They carry out searches for vulnerable, missing individuals through aviation methods. These people could be lost children, people with Alzheimer’s or individuals at risk from committing suicide.

Funds raised for Skywatch benefit people locally in Northern Ireland and they rely solely on volunteers.

While Philip trains, he is not just pushing his body but pushing his fundraising targets.

“In the past, I have had great success holding fundraising days at local supermarkets. “ says Philip.

Philip plans to take the same approach to his fundraising this year, but he is not alone, he will have full support from our Envision family.

Philip started his fundraising in July and has fundraising dates booked up until Christmas.

The first store to support him was Brownstown P & G based in Portadown, this was hosted by store managers Nathan and Lynn (pictured above).

Philip will be returning to this store to continuing raising funds before the fundraising end date in April.

On the 16th August, Philip was joined by our commercial director Amanda Campbell for a fundraising day in ASDA ( Portadown). This event was hosted by their community champion Elaine (pictured left).

Philip will also be fundraising in Tesco (Craigavon) on Christmas Eve. He will be fundraising from 10am -2pm – If you are around the area, pop in a say hello! This event will be hosted by Tesco’s community champion Marian.
